Our Approach to Treating

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism occurs when your body produces too much thyroid hormone, called thyroxine. This hormone helps regulate metabolism, as well as heart rate and body temperature. Left untreated, hyperthyroidism can lead to serious complications, including a fast and irregular heartbeat鈥攃alled an arrhythmia鈥攖he most common type being atrial fibrillation. Forceful heartbeats, known as palpitations, as well as shortness of breath and heart failure may also occur.

At 青瓜视频鈥檚 Thyroid Unit, our team of experts works together to diagnose hyperthyroidism and provide you with personalized care. These doctors include endocrinologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and endocrine surgeons.

Surgeons at 青瓜视频 are considered high-volume providers, meaning they perform more endocrine surgeries than doctors at most other medical centers in the New York City area. The collective experience among our thyroid specialists leads to fewer complications and better outcomes, helping to make 青瓜视频 a trusted center for the treatment of thyroid disease.

Treatment for Hyperthyroidism

People with hyperthyroidism can be treated with medication to reduce the amount of hormone produced by the thyroid gland and to relieve symptoms. For people whose condition doesn鈥檛 respond to medication or who can鈥檛 tolerate the side effects of medication, permanent treatment may be necessary. This includes radioactive iodine ablation therapy or, more rarely, surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.
