When life-threatening injuries happen—such as a fall, a motor vehicle crash, or a construction site accident—the team at the Trauma Center at �����Ƶ Hospital—Brooklyn provides expert critical care.

As soon as we are notified that an injured person is heading to the center, our team is mobilized. Trauma Center experts assemble within minutes in the Emergency Department at �����Ƶ Hospital—Brooklyn, where a nurse reports on the scope of the injuries, and we quickly develop a plan to address each person’s specific needs. 

Our Trauma Center specialists include the emergency department’s attending physician and nurses, as well as an anesthesiologist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, spine surgeon, respiratory therapist, and surgeons who specialize in critical care, orthopedics, and trauma. Each response team is specific to the care the person requires.

Level 1 Trauma Center

Our goal is to make sure the injured person receives life-saving care as quickly as possible. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, we treat more than 1,500 adults each year and have a critical care surgeon onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The most common injuries we treat involve people in car accidents, bicyclists hit by cars, and older people who had severe falls that resulted in head injuries or fractures. 

We have special expertise and resources to treat people who have experienced head injuries, including the resources of the neurointensive care unit at �����Ƶ Hospital—Brooklyn, where we treat brain and spine-related injuries and illnesses. 

Rehabilitation is also part of our care. Our physical therapists from Rusk Rehabilitation help people get moving as soon as possible based on the extent of their injuries. After a person leaves the hospital, we continue to monitor his or her recovery during weekly trauma clinics, which are times dedicated to follow-up care for people who are still recovering from their injuries.  

We also focus on accident prevention, and conduct community outreach programs and seminars to educate the public on topics such as how to prevent falls and improve bicycle safety.
